What is the history and popularity of the app?

The Movie Tracker was created by Brian Hoffman and Shirin Amnifarin in 2010. No historical or statistical information is available.

What are the differences to other apps?

The Movie Tracker is a tool to track movies watched, reviewed, and listed to watch later. The algorithm creates suggestions based on reviewed movies, though the movie suggestions seem to mostly be older films.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

The interface is slightly confusing. It’s difficult to find where to add movies and users may have to spend some time navigating within the app to find the appropriate place to add a movie. Within the recommendations tab, the review option is presented and this adds a movie to the user’s database. Another way to enter quick star-based reviews in bulk is to use the “track a movie” tab.

After entering five movies, the application offers recommendations. Users can indicate whether they wish to review it (which adds it to their lists for future recommendations to be added to the algorithm), add it to a list, or if they are not interested (which also affects the results).

Results seem to be mostly older films and most make sense based on the eclectic mix entered during review. The app also recommends friends based on recommendations and allows friends and followers – though the suggested user had not tracked any movies, so the basis of the recommendation makes no sense at all. Users may message others and follow their activity. It is unclear how to add other users as friends. Badges are added, but it is also unclear as to what this means. The leaderboard appears to present users who have tracked the most users, thus generating points, again for no apparent reason.

Users may purchase discount movie tickets for AMC and National Amusements from the site with free shipping. Users may also sync with IMDB review accounts.

How does the registration process work?

To register for The Movie Tracker, users provide a username, email address, and password. Users can also sign in by linking to their Facebook accounts.

What does it cost to use the application?

The application is free to use.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Movie buffs with spare time who like to play with online databases may get a kick out of The Movie Tracker, but most people will find the interface clumsy and mostly useless.
